I hate to say this, but this and Ran are both toss-ups for my favorite Shakespeare adaptation even though they're stripped down to their rawest forms. I love how overly dramatic, kabuki-like, Kurosawa made these flicks.
Mifune looks as incredible as his acting in this one. I love how the combination of his make-up and demeanor make him look like a corpse almost. Great, great movie. I wish Kurosawa did Hamlet, too. That would've kicked ass with samurai.
