Review of Throne of Blood (1957) by Jeremy F — 23 Oct 2009
Akira Kurosawa delivers his version of Shakespeare's Macbeth. He does a brilliant job, as one would expect. Mifune delivers his finest performance that I've seen to date. The imagery is brilliant.
The pacing of the film was my only problem... I like taking ones time with shots and scenes, but here I think Kurosawa embraces the slow pace to an extent that over-does it. But the **spoiler alert if you've never seen Macbeth** death scene is one of the most amazing sequences I've ever seen.
After listening to the commentary, I discovered that all 100+ arrows were ACTUALLY shot at Mifune and it the fear on his face was VERY real. It is jawdropping. **end spoiler** A must see!
