Review of Three to Tango (1999) by Richard V — 18 Oct 2009
Fun, frothy (I hate that word, yet I use it very often in reviews of rom coms) and undeniably flawed, this is a date movie film. Matthew Perry peddles his usual schtick, Neve Campbell makes you fall in love with her (really, there has genuinely rarely been a more loveable turn, especially by someone playing a mistress - shades of Holly Golightly, though abosultely not in that league) and the false premise plot bumbles along quite charmingly, if leaving reality behind quite early.
The biggest fun comes from some of the supporting turns, with the ever sublime John C McGinley in a blink and you'll miss it role which I'd call a scene stealer if it wasn't for the fact that Oliver Platt steals that credit.
Platt is always tremendous value, and never better than when playing an OTT, potentially objectionable character who is also intelligent, witty, and more importantly, likeable as well. Slight confection as it is, I still long to use the line "You have made your big gay bed, and now you must slumber gayly in it.
".
