Review of Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) by Healingtoolbox — 01 Sep 2022
This is a multi-dimension love story. Two of my favorite actors. It won't appeal to everyone. For me 10/10 for multiple reasons. It will appeal most, to those with an interest in the subtle truths of love, love as a subtle mystery. I think the entry point into this tale for many people is the old advice, "If you own a bird locked inside a cage; and, want to know if you have established a bond of love and trust with it, set it free and see if it returns to you--or not".
Exceptional directing (in films, stories inside larger stories notoriously challenge directors to make them feel substantial).
The New Yourker's Anthony Lane complains, "The movie, though a frantic treat for the retina, is also oddly inactive." Anthony, were you expecting the third act to be Miller's Fury Road? As a script it has two aims. One is it has to find a new, satisfying conclusion to a very tired narrative cliche, usually resolved by a trick ironic ending. Second, the script wants both characters to thrive, prosper and learn more about the Inner Game of Love. It's a tall order. Most writers fail at such challenges. James Bond only ever learns about the Outer Game of Love. Nor is this Harry Potter and the Djinn. Those are much easier to write.
