Review of Three Monkeys (2008) by Heather M — 04 May 2009
This is the 2nd film i've seen from turkish auteur, nuri bilge ceylan... his first film, the cannes sleeper hit "climates" was something I didn't really care for...it was too slow and uneventful for me so '3 monkeys' was something I took with caution before I went to see it.
.. well I was in for a very big surprise because I absolutely adored the film! there were still some trademark ceylan techniques - 3 layer framing, long and heavy silences, and the way he plays with weather to highlight a mood, but '3 monkeys' was a total departure from 'climates' in terms of plot and character development.
I really loved how the story turned itself around, especially with the last act climax... brilliant! =).
