Review of Three Kings (1999) by Andrew P — 15 Feb 2012
For whatever reason, this film comes across as probably the most realistic portrayal of war I've seen on screen (I fortunately am unable to compare it to the real thing). The characters come across as just normal guys who don't particularly want to be in Iraq.
While they may not be heroes in the traditional sense, they still end up doing the right thing and everyone likes them by the time the credits roll. The film never really goes into the realm of the melodramatic like do most war movies, save at the ending (of which I've heard even the director wasn't found).
There are battles, but they aren't grandiose. Some may be turned off by the anti-US foreign policy message (read: the Gulf War was all about oil), but at the very least Three Kings makes you remember the millions of civilians caught up in war.
