Review of Three Kings (1999) by Mike D — 14 Apr 2012
'Three Kings' is unique in that it's one of the few films set in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm. That aside, Director David O. Russell takes a somewhat ordinary tale of treasure and turns it into an engaging journey through the sands of Iraq and, more importantly, a people's struggle for freedom.
The film is helped by an all-star cast led by George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, which works well despite sounding like a motley crew. Additionally, Nora Dunn excels as a driven journalist on the hunt for a big story since the conflict had just ended when the protagonists embark on their desert excursion.
While there are a few memorable action sequences scattered throught 'Kings,' the story is the main selling point, especially the experience Wahlberg's character is subjected to and the effect it has on his outlook on life.
The fact that the film weaves between being serious and lighthearted increases its value, as comedic parts littered throught the plot are more than welcome. 'Three Kings' is a well-balanced military themed film, as it does not sacrifice excitement for substance but instead finds a way to achieve both without seeming too cheesy or preachy.
