Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Stanley F — 28 Jan 2018
It's early in the year, but I seriously doubt if this film won't end the year as our pick for best film of 2108- don't miss it.
THere are just SO many good things going on here , I could write a whole bunch about each of them, but here's a resume.
1. mordant, black humour that hits the mark time after time - funny in such a sympathetic and rounded way, but sharp as sharks' teeth.
2. All-round excellent acting and direction- not a duff character in sight for the whole film- and some memorable characters - we loved Woody Harrelson as Willoughby and Sam Rockwell as Dixon but there's another 6 or more actors who just gave superb performances.
3. really good plotting and script-writing - many times you expect one series of events, and get another, but in such a convincing way, and the characters just keep developing and becoming more complex and more HUMAN as you go- beautifully observed, and the film just doesn't let you get away with easy binary thinking - you are pulled into the complex lives of humans- their motivations , actions and reactions, and you cannot help but see them as PEOPLE, whatever your first reactions to the character are.
3. great cinematography - not a poor choice of shot on show.
4. relevant- contemporary comment on modern America and historical tropes -.
5. we want to see it again.
GO see it folks, you can't go wrong.
