Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Jeffrey P — 02 Mar 2018
Martin McDonagh's (In Bruges, 7 Psychopaths) "Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri", takes a sharp script and fantastic performances only to then have the film fizzle out by the end. Everyone in the movie is great but Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand carry the movie. While I do have a problem with how McDormand's character was written, she still gives a fantastic showy performance and Sam Rockwell's character is the only character in the film who.
Has any sort of arc.
McDonagh's script does a mostly great job at balancing between being very Dark/dramatic and comedic. I do think that there are moments in the movie where dramatic tension was undercut with jokes, at times it felt like he was trying to mimic the Coen Brothers. I also found the some of the writing to be ham fisted at times.
My biggest problem with this movie though is its ending. After the movie ends I felt that the movie was lacking something. Throughout the film we are building up to something only for the movie come to an abrupt ending. It felt like he was trying to go for a sort "No Country for Old Men" ending.
I also had problems with "No Country for Old Men" ending but the more I watched it the more I liked it. Maybe the same thing could be said for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".
Final Score: 4/5 or 8 out of 10.
