Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Rotten R — 03 Mar 2018
This movie confused me. I wasn't quite sure if this movie was a mediocre drama with some failed attempts at humor or a mediocre comedy with some failed attempts at drama.
The premise is interesting, a mother trying to provoke the local police into solving the murder of her daughter. The local police are portrayed at once as intimidating (they seem to fill the streets with cop cars and marauding cops on the high street terrifying passers-by) and as racist and violent incompetents who have to hunt through dozens of pockets in order to find their badges. The story seemed to meander through various stereotypes until it turns out we were supposed to sympathize with the racist cop and his bullying chief after all.
I can't believe this was nominated for best picture.
