Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Liam H — 06 Mar 2018
I think this film was a bit of a mess and will be hard to review because some of the bad things about the movie truned out to be the better side of the movie and some of the good things turned out to be of poor quality.
First things first...when is this movie supposed to be set? the time period was very confused. The ambulance looked as though it was present day but some of the stylisation of peoples homes looked like it was from the 80's and 90's.
On top of that some of the attitudes of the police charcters was like something out of the 1920's or 1950's. On that issue, I am sorry I don't believe that aspect of the story was true to life at all.
That the police are these open racists modelled on something from the era of segregation. That aspect of the story was too far fetched. Yes there are racists in the modern times but they are subtle and hidden, not these 2-D predictable characters.
I really like sam rockwell and he has a natural affinity for providing levity in films however I foud the humour in this film misplaced because the subject matter was so serious it felt out of place. On the good parts of the movie I thought the dialouge was excellent with some really funny lines invloved.
There were really interesting characters also. The ending of the movie however is dreadful. To go through all that with such a depressing subject matter to be fobbed off with an 'open to interpretation ending' was a very dissapointing cop out.
So in the end because the ending was so dissapointing I apprecited the humour in this movie more because there was nothing left to cling on to. Even although I didn't agree that a movie of such seriousness should have humour so prominent in it.
I also thought at certain points the movie was going to be an SJW diversity feauturette but to be fair the movie turned it around and gave fair credence to everyone involved. Apart from all that a very confused movie with a really poor ending.
