Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Matt C — 14 Mar 2018
'In Bruges' was a brilliant black comedy, 'Seven Psychopaths' was an up your arse abomination. So what to expect from McDonagh's latest Oscar nominated effort. Well it's very different from those previous films, but it's really quite brilliant.
Yes it is funny, but it's not a ha, ha comedy, it's normal back and forth banter. It's funny in that effortless way that Tarantino used to be able to do and makes the characters all feel instantly more real and rounded as a result.
The central trio of McDormand, Rockwell and in particular Harrelson are really brilliant and I was completely enthralled throughout. There are one or two miss-steps (I really didn't like a glaring central CGI section) but other than that this is brilliant and I'll be intrigued to sit down and watch it again.
