Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Kevin S — 21 Apr 2018
For the life of me, I can't understand how this film was an Oscar nominee. One the plus side, there are great performances from all the leads. Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, and Frances McDormand were all fantastic.
The problem with the film is that the main character isn't at all sympathetic, and that's saying a lot given why she does what she does. The "bad" guy, the sheriff, is the most sympathetic of the main characters.
If this were supposed to be a clever flip, it wasn't communicated in the film. The film is well-paced and worth a watch. It's just that it's something you watch as an observer of how crappy people are to one another, and not because you care about what happens.
People do terrible things and there's almost no consequences. It's well-made and well-acted but still a mess and pretty overrated.
