Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Inconvenient F — 26 Jan 2018
While I enjoyed much of the film, there were scenes which simply did not work. For example, when they are alone together the police sergeant's wife says to him, "You have a very nice cock, Mr Willoughby", to which he replies, "I recognise that line.
That's from Shakespeare, I think." Which hands the punchline to his wife, "No. Oscar Wilde." That dialogue does not sound like small town backwoods America. It sounds like smart-ass educated Dublin - McDonagh's background.
That is the trouble with writer-directors: the filters which remove bad dialogue are missing. Which is a pity, because one bad piece of dialogue can spoil the effect of many good preceding scenes.
