Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Joz — 10 Jan 2018
I don't love many movies this much. But I love this one; it's almost certainly the best of the 2017 movies I have seen. This movie cuts no corners with its characters. Even the most despicable **** -- people that you want with all your heart to hate -- are given a supurb level of depth and development; in addition to this, the close-quarters small town setting gives an unsettling intimacy to the vitriolic and sometimes outrageously violent events of this film.
Some people have expressed concerns over this movie's inconsistent tone. Honestly, I feel that the level of lightheartedness and comedy that this movie hangs onto balances pretty perfectly with the more prominent, painful, emotional aspects.
It's part of what makes this movie so interesting (and enjoyable) for me. I'm sad that this didn't resonate as well with other people. The performances are all fantastic and commendable in their own right, (especially from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell) and you should watch it if you can.
If nothing else, I promise you'll be thinking about it for a little while after you've left the theater.
