Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Mary T — 08 Jan 2018
Every time I see a woody (the car, not Harrelson) in a film, I know I'm about to be manipulated. This movie covers all the squares in indie bingo, including the unresolved ending, the alt rock soundtrack, Frances McDormand.
.. But here's why the good reviews are puzzling -- it is so packed solid with stereotypes it can't breathe -- the racist, lazy, brutal Southern-ish cops, the bratty emo teenagers, the ex-husband with the young, cute and stupid girlfriend, the blue-collar small town, the noble black folks, and the beleaguered mom archetype.
As if to drive home the point that these cops are RACIST, they must use the n word, more than once. Nice work by some of the minor characters though (the new police chief, Peter Dinklage, and disgraced cop Dixon's mom).
Essentially, this could have been a great movie with more script innovation. I don't think this one will stick with me.
