Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Jonathan B — 15 Nov 2017
Funny, moving and very, very good. Frances McDormand plays a bereaved mother who decides to goad the local police into action by posting a message spanning three billboards on the approach to the town.
Despite the rather dark subject matter, there are a number of laugh-out-loud moments as McDormond's character Mildred, dances around police Sheriff Wiloughby (Woody Harrelson). The two gain a sense of respect for each other and gradually a bond of friendship grows.
Both the leads are stunning in their respective roles and I'd go as far as to say, it is the best I've ever seen Harrelson. There's also a brilliant role for Sam Rockwell as a complete oaf of a police officer who does much to add to the comedy and make life difficult for his boss.
Martin McDonagh manages to direct this terrific movie with considerable skill and tenderness making for a very enjoyable and emotional couple of hours.
