Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Willyam_Carr — 17 Dec 2017
'Three Billboards' is Martin McDonagh's best film to date. He juggles the film's conflicting tones and themes with ease; this is the film where his growth as a director becomes clear. This is also an incredibly timely and moving film.
It handles themes of guilt and forgiveness with care, after putting McDonagh's nihilist touch on them; nobody is ever really forgiven and everyone is guilty of something. Frances McDormand gives a powerful performance, rivaling that of her Oscar winning role in 'Fargo'.
She plays a grieving mother with the guts of John Wayne and power of a mother's rage. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson also give strong supporting turns, but are somewhat overshadowed by the gravity of McDormand performance.
It's hilarious, heartbreaking, and ultimately, hopeful film that I highly recommend.
