Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Elizabeth G — 18 Dec 2017
Three Billboards is a smart character study that has a perfect ending; unfortunately, it doesn't recognize where that ending is and continues on, attempting to provide the audience with absolute resolution only to again pull it out from under the rug.
Don't get me wrong; I'm a fan of ambiguous endings, but Three Billboards sort of wants to have it both ways. Nevertheless, the film is anchored by three wonderful performances: McDormand, Harrelson, and (most of all) Sam Rockwell.
Writer-director McDonagh (In Bruges) proves once again to be a master dialoguist, a sort of down-to-earth version of David Mamet; he just needs to master the latter's economy to truly produce a masterpiece.
Still, it's a solid film.
