Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Christopher C — 20 Nov 2017
I found this movie beyond disturbing. It is tone deaf, especially in the current climate. The story of a mother's reckoning with the rape and murder of her daughter is absolutely not safe in the hands of these filmmakers.
The story becomes about the enabling and the redemption of a criminally violent male cop instead of treating the real theme with any sensitivity. Trampling other sensitive issues such as race and dwarfism along the way.
Everything from the young wife of the chief of police and "young n dumb" teenage girlfriend of the ex husband has guy goggles written all over it. The only believable character was the alcoholic mother of the violent cop.
The fact that this movie was given the budget to cast every talented indie actor you have ever loved and is now being touted for Oscar success says everything we need to know about how well the industry is dealing with gender parity.
Tell your own story guys and stop making black comedies about someone else's tragedy.
