Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Shay N — 24 Feb 2018
Some films are just stupendous because of the performances and this is one of those Oscar 2018 nominated movies for ya!
A black comedy traversing through a searing drama where a mother of a raped daughter rents out 3 billboards near her home, which read, in sequence, "Raped While Dying", "And Still No Arrests?", and "How Come, Chief Willoughby?" as the perpetrator is not nabbed. How the quiet serene hamlet townbags of the fictional Missouri town react and turn into a new leaf is what forms the rest of the story.
McDonaugh has asserted that he got the idea from a real life billboard (which I remember seeing on Facebook some years ago) makes sure he has a pumped screenplay with some suitable score, topped by his veteran actors neat performances by Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson; which ended up in all 3 being nominated.
McDormand was in the limelight on telly for OliveKittiridge and now she catapulted back to her Fargo days on cinema with a finely nuanced display of emotions with a slight shifts in expressions, slapped on your faces with some scandalising slurs! Rockwell as the racist police officer ably supports her with an equally organic performance which bowls you over. Harrelson IMO wasn't that great!
What's more interesting is that with the recent series of school shootings, atleast 4 towns in USA have used this strategy to throw light on the ghastly incidents.
???? 4 Stars.
