Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Corey Z — 02 Mar 2018
This film starts a bit slow, but the subtlety of the performances slowly builds drama and intrigue. I was captivated by Frances McDormand in the lead role and found myself rooting for her as she did some deplorable things, a testament to her ability to establish sympathy in a viewer even as she's on a semi-misguided revenge quest.
Sam Rockwell was outstanding as well, similarly challenging me to sympathize with him in spite of his actions and idiocy. The film is also funny, with witty dialogue and situational humor that gives the film some levity in tone.
Occasionally the comedy in the film felt out of place, but it all landed.
