Review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) by Jenifer T — 27 Jun 2018
I like good acting and quirky/dark comedy, so for that, this film more than fit the bill. It was full of characters who were flawed and often downright unlikable but who also showed glimmers of real humanity. Not one character was ill-cast in this movie. Being that the overarching subject of this movie is the unsolved rape and murder of a teenage girl, you know going into it that this will not be some light drama. And, this movie will make you uncomfortable at times for things even beyond that unsolved crime. Even so, it's engaging, and interesting, and just when you think things will go one way, they go in a direction you hadn't imagined.
My only complaint about the movie is the ending [SPOILER ALERT AHEAD]. While I know that plenty of crimes go unsolved year after year, when I see a movie, I don't like loose ends at the end. I didn't need a warm, fuzzy, tidy ending, but I needed some better level of resolution. I knew it probably wouldn't end in the clean way it felt like it would at one point, but I didn't expect to be left hanging either. It's even more disappointing to end that way after a film I've enjoyed so thoroughly up to that point.
