Review of ¡Three Amigos! (1986) by Ian R — 18 Jan 2011
I saw this for the first time at my godparents' house several years ago as a kid. My cousin put it on the tv and I was glued to it. I liked the movie a lot and I was laughing frequently.
I just watched this movie again a few days ago from a critical perspective and I still liked the movie a lot, just not as much as I did before. The movie has plenty of memorable gags and it has a good share of laugh out loud moments. However, some of the jokes were predictable and a lot of the time the movie was annoying in terms of how loud and senseless some of the content was.
The movie had almost non-stop gunshots. Almost every scene had a gun being shot and it was annoyingly overdone. The sound was stuck in my head. I was surprised that so many bullets were shot because at first I thought the Amigos' guns were Hollywood props that simply made noises. However, laster in the film the same guns fired bullets. I also wondered how so many guns could be provided in such short notice during the climactic scene.
A lot of the jokes were fairly predictable too. The jokes may have been funny, but they could be seen from a mile away. Nonetheless, many of the jokes were great and I had plenty of good laughs. The 3 lead actors were a load of fun and were highly likable.
The story was unique and original. It's a hilarious concept (movie action stars getting mixed up for real heroes). It's a highly original concept that has been used in many modern movies (Galaxy Quest, Tropic Thunder). The settings, music, and sets were all pluses as well. The movie was well directed by comedy mastermind John Landis. This is a lovable and sometimes very funny movie that could have been better if it had a tighter grip on the story and if some of the jokes weren't as obvious.
