Review of ¡Three Amigos! (1986) by Marc B — 10 Jul 2012
Steve Martin's film work runs the gamut from the brilliance of "The Man With Two Brains" to something like "Three Amigos," of which he is star, executive producer and cowriter. Western spoofs are never notable for original plots, and this is no exception. Nevertheless, it revels in the cornball clichés of the low-budget oater, and benefits from amiably innocent performances. The characterisation is paper thin, and Landis' timing as sloppy as ever; but if you enjoy brainless slapstick that allows space for irrelvant absurdities like a singing bush and an invisible swordsman, it's entertaining enough. As gamuts go, this is one heck of one. An uneven comedy; Short is based, talking about movie insider stuff to the people in the village who have no idea what he is talking about.
VERDICT: "Matinée" - (Mixed reaction). These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says to pay matinée prices to see at a theatre or buy an ex rental or a cheap price the DVD to own.
