Review of ¡Three Amigos! (1986) by Harry W — 04 Jun 2013
Three Amigos! wasn't all that it could have been and takes a while to get the atmosphere of the story flowing in an entertaining matter, but thanks to its charismatic lead actors and foray into a comedy mixed with a western, it proves entertaining.
Three Amigos! does have issues. Namely, the fact that the true comedy takes an extended period to take off and for a while the best comedic moments are ambitious but not hilarious, and they don't seem to capitalise on the cast outside of Steve Martin for the most part of it, and it leaves the viewers forgetting the name Martin Short and lamenting the small amount of comedy provided by Chevy Chase in one if his more successful ventures, so it isn't all it could have been.
Also, since the plot is utterly predictable we could have hoped for some comedic gimmicks within the screenplay. Here, we end up a little bit shortchanged by a film that boasts such a comedic cast and it requires them to work their charms to cover up the shortcoming in Three Amigos!
Nevertheless, Three Amigos! was funny and a good film to watch.
Mainly it was the charismatic cast that saved it.
Steve Martin made a great comedic lead and was full of his iconic energy and ability to work a scene as best he could to milk it for all it's worth.
Chevy Chase was also good when he capitalised on his ability to make use of physical humour well, and it was good to see.
Martin Short was ok, but not one that stood out.
Also, the film is rich with its colour and ability to make use of musical numbers in its plotting to entertain, and the western sequences were made really well, especially the final shootouts which was a heap of fun and was created with fine cinematography .
And the musical score made the venture a rich one, and it proved effective in branding the Amigo theme.
So Three Amigos! is well intentioned and a well crafted nostalgic comedy, even though its scattered and uneven in the laughs.
