Review of Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) by Dewey M — 02 Jan 2008
I find it hard to believe that this harmless, entertaining farce/spoof should be a cause for some debate. Yes, the depiction of the Oriental characters is terribly stereotypical, but NOTHING in this film should be taken SERIOUSLY!!! How serious can it be when Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore foil a white slavery ring with Beatrice Lillie as dragon-lady Mrs.
Meers? I've seen the stage adaptation; and it's god-awful horrible. There is no way to top the dream comedy cast in this film. The humor is often over the top-- and Carol Channing is COMPLETELY over the top as Muzzy.
Just go to the kitchen for a snack whenever Channing sings. Mercifully, she only sings two songs. The role of vivacious flapper Millie provides Julie Andrews with one of her best film roles, and is a perfect showcase for her as an excellent comidianne.
Beatrice Lillie is a hoot. Don't think about it. Just sit back, relax, and laugh with this old-fashioned and very funny farce.
