Review of Thoroughbreds (2018) by Scott W — 18 Mar 2018
Thoroughbreds, starring Olivia Cooke (Amanda) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Lily) is an odd little film. It is the tale of two teenage friends who reconnect after drifting apart and it leads to some dark places. Amanda is emotionally stunted and infamous in town for having personally euthanized her horse, who had a lame leg. Lily is a young woman whose mother married a mentally abusive man. The film starts as the girls reconnect when Amanda's mother hires Lily to tutor her.
The movie is a slow burn, but I still got pulled in. The two girls go together like dynamite and a detonator cap which eventually explodes. Amanda does not want to do harm but has the talent for doing so. Lily feels the need to do harm but has no idea how to do it. Apart they are relatively harmless but put them together and you have a train wreck that you cannot look away from.
I left this film bemused. It goes to dark places, but you can be sympathetic to what happens, while still being repulsed by it.
