Review of Thor: The Dark World (2013) by Brandon C — 24 Mar 2017
Before I went to review I needed to watch this movie again because a refresher was necessary because it felt like I was in some sort of haze watching this sequel to Thor in theaters. The events of Thor 2 pick up exactly pretty much where the Avengers left off soul has apprehended Loki and has brought him before their father Odin. During this whole thing Loki shows obstinance for being the "black haired sheep" of the family this obstinence is meant by Odin's wrathful and resentful nature, but during this whole opening a Loki looks towards his mother looking for her approval showing the fact that he is the better man having don't nearly conquered another realm nearly by himself and in the end there's something Eedipal about this.
Oh I forgot are very awesome yes generic villain Malekith and his black goo gimmick the black do being the aether. This aether is a destructive force that allows dimensions to crossover, interact, and overall join together pretty much or something like that. It's really vague on what this thing does but also they're very vague in the movie about a lot of things so just hang on with me here, please.
Pick up on earth with our female protagonist Jane Foster who's had a lot happened to her since the Avengers. I mean her teacher Stellan Skarsgard has apparently officially gone crazy running around on TV in his underwear, and also her lovely assistant Darcy has returned, yay, the one that absolutely had no reason to be in any other Thor movies other than the fact that she at that point is kind of still now a famous sitcom TV star along with her assistant...So Jane's assistant has an assistant. Now lets introduce our villain Malekith, a dark elf from one of the other realms whose sole purpose in life is to get the black goo in his hands and all over himself so he can conquer the entire known galaxy.
Now I'm going to cut the story short because it needs to be seen because I'm going to cover a lot about the physics and why this movie kind of does yet does not work. Overall the premise starts out very, very solid grounded in reality but as it goes on and they introduce the villains and the McGuffin and try to figure out what's going on they "luckily"they tell the audience that stuff is going to go down and that physics will not apply anymore so anything will happen and this allows for a lot of quirky, off the wall, kind of "huh?" humor. Now that does not mean the movie is bad, it is still a fun time at the movies and even at home. But in the overall view of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this movie makes the least amount of sense and other than Tom Hiddleston playing Loki the only really interesting character still is Loki and the ending with the lays out perfectly for s Thor 3 (Ragnarok) thank God will get that in 3-4 years. malicous the villain was much better and more interesting in terrifying revisiting than it was in the theater. plus the whole moral dilemma that for house of choosing which hot chick power roll to hook up with is awesome in my eyes I envy it does he hook up with the warrior princess type or does he hook up with the smart scientist type oh my god this is every guy's dream and they're both hot. and one final thing the direction for the film Alan Taylor's direction is pretty bloody solid except for some of the annoying quirky humor and yes I noticed it there were some rom-com bits playing ou The timing was good for a romantic comedy of sorts, you almost fooled me Mr. Taylor I saw them coming; but the visuals are still very stunning when fully realized in every world even the barren wasteland that holds our McGuffin.
bStill a very fun movie, but overall it's the weakest of the phase two movies and to this point I'd say it's one of the two weakest in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe so for that I still give it a 3.1 out of 5. Still fun but a disappointment when compared with what's coming and what has been.
