Review of Thor: The Dark World (2013) by Ross G — 13 May 2015
By 2013, the name Marvel means entertainment and gigantic box office success but does that means that every film they made is great? "Thor" is the perfect example of a mediocre film in the MCU so "Thor the Dark World" had potential in fixing the character. Did Alan Taylor succeeded in this easy task?
After the events of "The Avengers", the nine realms are in chaos so Thor and the rest of the warriors of Asgard have to restore peace but an ancient race known as the "Dark Elves" remerge from the darkness with the plan destroying the universe.
After "The Avengers" arrived, the most popular character, arguably, was Loki and that was the strength that the Thor franchise had, but sadly Alan Taylor and Kevin Feige couldn't improve the character. "Thor 2" counts with a laughable and unnecessary complicated story, you can even describe this story; inconsistent pacing, unconvincing CGI, a lack of actually funny jokes, predictable moments, one of the most forgettable villains of the MCU (and that's saying something), an unnecessary amount of Loki which at the beginning it was helpful and well used but as the film progresses, Loki becomes a burden to the narrative; an insane amount explanation/excuse for more films, solid actors are wasted in forgettable roles, the unnecessary characters are still here and there are even more, and the lack of seriousness completely underlines the universal risk that the Dark Elves supposedly present. But even with all those humongous flaws, "Thor the Dark World" is a little entertaining if you accept cartoon logic.
"Thor: The Dark World" continuous to demonstrate that Thor doesn't work in a standalone film. If you are a big Marvel fan, you will enjoy this forgettable and mediocrely made film.
