Review of Thor: The Dark World (2013) by Campbell P — 13 May 2015

Thor The Dark World sort of takes a new shape from the other MCU movies. The second entry in the Thor series is much darker than the others to begin with. All the setting is dim and colorless which suits the movie and wasn't a bad thing at all.

The settings looked incredible when it came down to the cinematography and overall design, everywhere there was great landscapes and buildings. The special effects, as expected from a Marvel movie, are really great and realistic in a fictional way.

The great characters from the first movie are back with the addition of Malekith and Ian the intern which were good characters for the most part. Thor, Jane, Odin, and Loki were all fantastic as in the first Thor.

Malekith isn't the best villain however. For the first 3/4s of the film he's all talk and no action and compared to Loki as the villain before, he's really nothing. His sidekick is more fun to watch than him.

The story follows Thor retrieving the Aether that infected Jane before Malekith can but he has to help defend Asgard with the help of an unlikely ally. The plot is really straightforward, a sort of get to point B from point A plot line.

What I mean is that it's basically just one story and they really focus on nothing else and I'm totally cool with that, it worked really well. I wasn't able to find much wrong with The Dark World until we saw more of the portals and it got really confusing on how they worked.

I understand they were put in different places throughout the town but it just was distracting. The character of Darcy is used way too much also. I understand that she's main comedic relief but everything she said was a joke and it got irritating.

There were other points of unnecessary comedy too where I was in the moment with a scene and then they crack a joke and it sucks me out of it. When Thir gets on the train and is standing there after he got knocked down badly was a distraction.

We are in an intense battle and we have a funny part? Save it for afterwards! With all this nitpicking aside Thor The Dark World is really fun and I ended up liking it more than the first. B+.
