Review of Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Michael H — 20 Dec 2017
I really enjoyed this movie. The humor was great, and still funny upon a second viewing. The interactions between Thor, Hulk, and Loki are great. The film has an incredibly light hearted feel, that reminds me a lot of Guardians of the Galaxy. The colors and music go along with this theme as well, with maybe some Tron elements thrown in. I would love to give it 5 stars bu there were a few things that I didn't like. (SPOILERS).
One, I found it very apparent what parts they had to re-shoot involving Odin. It was blatantly obvious that Thor and Loki were in front of green screen when they went to New York to find Odin, as well as when they transport to Norway to find him. When movies cost hundreds of millions to make, I don't know how they can throw in scenes that look that bad. And, maybe because of the re-shoots, the scene with Odin felt rushed. There was very little emotion involved in a scene that should have been packed full of it. This very well could be the last time we see Odin on the big screen. This should have been a great moment for both Thor and Loki to share, but instead it happens in the blink of an eye, and they immediately face off against Hela. As I mentioned above, the movie is very light hearted, almost to a fault. The warriors 3, who are Thor's best friends, and play pretty big roles in the previous two films are all quickly killed off, and then never mentioned again. In fact, 2 of them get killed so quickly that when I brought it up to my friends after the movie, they totally missed that they were 2 or the 3. These are 3 of the best warriors in all of Asgard. Only Thor is greater than they are. I understand Hela is all powerful, but they should have been given a least a little screen time to fight back, much like Hogun. I am not saying a huge part of the movie had to be dedicated to them, but even a mention from Heimdall to Thor, when they have their linked connection, would have been enough for Thor to show some emotion. I also feel they missed a prime opportunity to put Thunderstruck into the movie. I mean, come on, how perfect would that have been (that didn't actually effect my score though). Other than that, I really did like the film, and I am excited to see where they go from here.
