Review of Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Liam H — 25 Jan 2018
It is hard to see what else this Thor movie could have crammed in. This movie is excellent and probably my pick as the best movie of 2017. The movie is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The movie does also have a lot of comedy in it but there is space for it in this film and it is pulled off with aplomb and doesn't detract from the seriousness of the challenge's in the movie.
There are a whole host of new characters in this movie and they are all fully fleshed out impressive & interesting additions. It is interesting to see Thor against the backdrop of space. It gives us as viewers a chance to see him out of his comfort zone.
It also gives an interesting style dynamic where the futurism of space clashes with the ancient stylisation of Asgard. The setting of space also allows us as viewers to feel more fully immersed in the Marvel Universe which allows the various films and characters to feel more real and ties the Universe together.
There are big epic moments of fan service in this film but it is way more than that and the entertaining moments are just a satisfying part of the rich tapestry. The plot is not linear it is a multi faceted story that is woven together with epic moments and implemented expertly.
Despite all these moments of comedy and fan service the film still manages to weave human emotion and the grand questions of life through the story between Thor and Odin. This part of the film is also satisfying and puts the icing on the cake.
This film will still be popular 20-30 years from now and that is a notable achievement by Marvel.
