Review of Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Brendan N — 04 Mar 2018
As popcorn cinema goes, this is right up there and for the non comic fan, they might not overlook 5 stars. I did enjoy the film but I felt comedy was out of place, not so much Thor but most of the other players in the film. The retro soundtrack was epic and I had a great time watching this but like Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel are on a new course and while it floats well for mainstream viewers, it might not sit well with die hard fanatics. Once again I felt disconnected from the villain, this is a serious issue with all the marvel films. The hero and fun parts are not the problem and this is easily avoided playing with a large crowd. The business model of marvel cannot be faulted but when I rewatch these films I tend to lower my score. The filmmaker cannot be faulted here, I think he injected a scope like the first Guardians, a film to play away from all the others. The marvel world is open up all over again and you sense the cosmic world is opening up in a big way. I liked the film but I'll never treat it like a cult film, it's epic and fun at the movies but slightly empty with character devotion, some of Thors colleagues die without another thought. 07-11-2017.
Caught this over the weekend and my review remains unchanged. Marvel are sacrificing a lot of the dynamics of the comic book for cheap gags, good for grabbing new fans but alienating true fans. 04-03-2018.
