Review of Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Late R — 17 Mar 2018
Depending on what you're looking for or what mood you're in, this will either be a massively entertaining ride, or a boatload of drivel powered by VFX with not much substance behind it. Well, I'm always up for something a bit fun and with the vibrant visuals, added humour and a greater exploration of the relationships between the beloved characters, showing us a different side to them, this certainly qualified.
Competent directing from Waititi in his first big-budget effort, a few fantastically memorable new characters (Korg, Valkyrie, Grandmaster, I'm looking at you), and the well-placed use of Led Zeppelin's 'Immigrant Song' which made for some epic fight scenes were all integral to the feel of the film.
The cons? The boring, uninventive story and a complete lack of anything affecting or meaningful within, as well as the overwhelming feeling that the lighter, comedic tone has made it impossible for any real sense of menace, threat or urgency to take hold.
Yes, those are some BIG cons. Fun will only get you so far, but if it's fun you're after, look no further.
