Review of Thor: Ragnarok (2017) by Reviews F — 17 Jul 2018
Thor: Ragnarok is the third installment in the Thor series and the only good or even decent one. It features a stellar cast, but characters who aren't done too well. Here is a non-spoiler review of Thor: Ragnarok.
10/10 points go to the ACTING category. The acting is extremely good throughout the film. The main star here is actually Jeff Goldblum. His acting is very well done and for some reason, he seems like the best actor. Idris Elba, Chris Hemsworth, and Cate Blanchette are also very good. I especially liked Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Her performance is also really good, and she just seems like a good person to be in that role. There are guest appearances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Hopkins and those are good. The person who wasn't as good was Karl Urban as Skurge. He doesn't give a special or memorable performance, and when I was re-watching this movie, I just thought, "Oh, it's that one guy.".
14/15 points go to the STORY category. The story is mostly well done. The plot twists are done well, and this really sets up for Infinity War by the end. Here is the problem. Thor isn't Thor. Thor is supposed to be a character who is a bit serious, but makes some jokes. He is the opposite here. He cracks a joke every 5 minutes so we are left with a few too many jokes. Hulk's arc is well done along with Loki's arc. I love how they did the death in this movie. I also adored the guest appearance by Doctor Strange.
7/10 points go to the VISUAL EFFECTS category. Hulk looks so fake. All of the effects are done well, but Hulk looks fake. He looks animated and looks like something out of Justice League. Ouch. I love the effects they did on Thor for the lightning. That was good. All was well for visual effects but Hulk.
8/10 points go to the CHARACTERS category. Thor is bad. Thor basically just drops all seriousness and just jokes around the whole time. When I re-watched this film, it is so noticeable. He is hardly any god with that kind of personality. I love the Grandmaster, I love Valkyrie, I love Loki, I also loved Doctor Strange. Odin seems like a jerk. Heimdall is forgettable. End of discussion.
5/5 points go to the DEVELOPMENT category. This movie introduces us to Banner's Hulk problem, a comical Thor, a better and alive Loki, and a new female character. The movie also sets up for Infinity War. I love how this movie didn't feel the need to have a load of involvement with Infinity War besides preparing you for it. The end of the film ends up making you want more and the movie sets up for the beginning of Infinity War.
3/5 points go to the ORIGINAL SCORE category. The person who does the score makes a basic score, but the main song is great. At least the songs are listed in the credits.
4/5 points go to the DESIGN category. The design is good, especially for the makeup and costumes. The movie messes up sometimes by trying to have a darker design, when it shouldn't be. Hela doesn't work in some environments because she is so dark and the environment is light. Same with Heimdall. Everything else is good.
10/10 points go to the DIRECTION category. Taika Waititi directs this movie so well. It is amazing how he does this funny and comedic take on Thor. I think that it is pretty good, even if it is out of character. The scenes look stunning because they are well shot. It was a good choice to do this story for the third Thor movie.
9/10 points go to the VISUAL AND SOUND QUALITY category. The film is colorful and you can enjoy listening to it. It won't hurt your ears. The problem is that there is one sequence where it keeps zooming in on Odin and it looks terrible and unpleasing to the eye. That is the only visual that hasn't been mentioned that is not at all good to me.
17/20 points go to the OVERALL CONSENSUS category. I loved this movie. It is well directed, mostly visually pleasing. It is amazing. I'd actually recommend this movie.
Score: 87%.
Grade: B+.
