Review of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) by Discussionaqueo — 15 Jul 2022
I enjoyed it, but I think it had some major plot flaws, likewise some terrible decisions re characterisation. Like by the mid-point of the film, they know where Gorr is, and that he's set a trap for them. So they go to the other gods for help, to have an army to fight Gorr. But when the other gods refuse them, it doesn't occur to them to ask anyone else for help! Like earth has a whole planet full of superheroes! Their goat-boat definitely could have fitted a few more people. Literally anyone would have been a big help, as when they go there's only three of them to fight Gorr.
I think another major decision mistake that is going to have consequences down the line is Zeus' stupid (and vaguely racist) comedic Greek accent. Like it is funny in a dumb sort of way, but it's a joke that gets old fast. And the post-credits scene implies that Zeus is being set up as one of the next major villains for Thor/the MCU. Imagine if Thanos had spoken in a stupid accent the entire time! You wouldn't be able to take him seriously... Any films he appears in in future will necessarily have a totally unserious tone. I feel like they've sacrificed the tone of a whole future film for a stupid joke that only lasts one scene in this one.
Anyway, in general I enjoyed it. I think the tone could have been better at times. Sometimes there is too much humour - but in general it was fine. I think some of the plot really just does not make sense though if you think about it even briefly, and they've dug themselves into a hole re the portrayel of Zeus.
