Review of Thor (2011) by Grace B — 03 Sep 2015
I'm going to begin this review by saying that of all the initial solo films that Marvel was going to release building up to the Avengers I thought this one was going to be the one that fell short of any of them. I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be although not the best one but one of the more entertaining ones, I'll further discuss this in depth when I talk about Iron Man 2. Maybe it's the fact that it's a fantastic environment or that Chris Hemsworth really surprised me by actually being a more superior actor than I anticipated him to be.
Our story begins in Asgard as it briefly covers the history leading into the introduction of Thor (Chris Hemsworth),his merry group of side characters, his mysterious brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and their parents Odin(Athony Hopkins)and Rene Russo. After an opening action scene that blew me away in terms of visual effects Odin condemns Thor for his brash arrogance and immaturity that he sends him to earth, seperates him from his hammer and over the course of the movie Thor must learn to mature, become more of an adult, a more capable leader He accomplishes all this he may one day become king. As the story unfolds Thor runs into Jane Foster(Natalie Portman), Erik Selvig( Stellan Skaarsgard), and Darcy(Kat Dennings)to help him learn his ways around the world since he is in the proverbial fish out of water story.
I'm not going to give too much of the story away so I'm just going to leave it right there but I will just overall summarize. I was ultimately happy with what Kenneth Branagh the director brought to the table here. Now Mr. Branagh is primarily known for bringing the works of William Shakespeare to the big screen mainly his his complete adaptation of Hamlet which ran just over 4 hours which is AWESOME!! As already stated Chris Hemsworth gave an amazing performance that I believe surprised everybody since the only other movie he's been in before was the opening to the Star Trek reboot back in 2009. Other teriffic performances came from Tom Hiddleston as Loki,Natalie Portman and Stellan Skaarsgard gave believable performances that rooted us in the real world and let Thor stroll around being his comedic foil. Thor also introduced a couple other key players into the Marvel Cinematic Universe SHIELD agent Phil Coulson and the even bigger addition that would ultimately become an Avenger, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye. Just don't blink for the two minutes he's on screen or else you'll miss him just as quickly as he showed up.
I'll end this review by saying that Thor was an amazing welcome addition and of all the phase one solo films that brought the Avengers together I do honestly believe that this one is not the best , but I find this to be the biggest surprise in its quality that was brought to the screen which is why I do give this a solid 3 out of 5. I look forward to Thor's next adventure, qnd more so seeing him as a member of the Avengers when they joined forces after another couple solo films.
If you like this review please like it at the bottom and share this with your friends please. I thank you all for reading this and I hope you all have a great and wonderful day. Next time I'll be talking to you guys about, personally, my favorite member of the Avengers. Next time the origin story of the First Avenger, CAPTAIN AMERICA.
