Review of Thor (2011) by Matthew D — 20 Oct 2015
Good, old-fashioned fantasy fun, a simple story is given depth by strong performances from Hemsworth and Hiddleston. In a world of gods and magical realms Portman's scientist is the most unbelievable thing here, but regardless Thor's arrogance giving away to nobility sucks us into a charming romance with her.
The otherworldly scenes are stunning; the Earth-bound ones needed to contrast, but little is done with them; the fish-out-of-water angle is a joy, but the consequences of a god on Earth are barely explored at all.
The small town setting is a nice change from the usual superhero movie city skylines, but the 'climatic' action is equally small scale with a very naff design for a brainless enemy. This is disappointing given the superb machinations by the film's primary antagonist; the action didn't need to be big so much as interesting, with a feeling that something is at stake.
