Review of Thor (2011) by Mitchell Z — 18 Apr 2015
Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is more than a superhero film, it is an odyssey. A hero's quest for redemption and glory, and we see our hero develop and grow throughout the film. Branagh, a lover of Shakespeare, directs the film as if it were a play written by him.
Two brother's lust for the throne, the hero banished only to find a way to return and triumph over the villain. Chris Hemsworth is fantastic as Thor, delivering a charming performance and having a powerful screen presence.
The villain of the film is also intriguing because he actually has clear motivation. Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, is as interesting a character as the lead, and Hiddleston is fantastic in the role.
Thor is a marvelous comic-book film.
