Review of This Sporting Life (1963) by Eric M — 21 Feb 2008
Tough and uncompromising portayal of working class struggle in early 60s Britain - resembling a young Brando, Richard Harris is magnificent as a miner turned rugby league star, exploited and rewarded by those around him for his violence and aggression, but as a result unable to find peace within himself to be loving and be loved.
Rachel Roberts wonderfully plays off this performance, and William Hartnell demonstrates his chops as a washed up talent scout (interesting subtext as well!). The rugby scenes are evocatively shot. A true classic of British cinema.
