Review of This Must Be the Place (2011) by Konrad R — 31 Mar 2012
SPOILER ALERT - "There's something not quite right here but I don't know what it is...".
Penn's character's signature line in this movie is an apposite reflection of a muddled and ultimately meandering plot. His character, whilst raising a wry or wan smile every now and again is ultimately a pastiche of previous incarnations such as Harvey Milk and the eponymous Sam. Penn can play this type of character brilliantly, we knew that.
Nobody else comes well out of this, Frances McDormand continues to live with the career defining Fargo hanging over her and a bizarre debut from Bono's daughter is as incongruous as the shots of the Aviva stadium which bookend the film.
If this is the place then I want to be somewhere else...
