Review of This Must Be the Place (2011) by Critic M — 09 Apr 2013
I expected a bit more from this one and was ultimately a bit underwhelmed. The trailer marketed it as a quirky dark comedy, but was quite different. Nonetheless I still enjoyed parts of it and thought that Sean Penn gave a great and very unique performance. Could have definitely done without Francis McDormand in this film, she didn't fit at all.
As for storyline, this was pretty well done and did a fine job of keeping the audience curious throughout the duration of the film. Incredible cinematography that was a treat visually. Some problems with this film for me were the slow going first half of the film and the hollow, pale independent feel that plagues so many indie and foreign films. This one was able to escape that feeling fairly quickly, but it was still evident at times. Overall a decent film with nice character development and a truly original plot which is always great to see.
