Review of This Means War (2012) by Marissa K — 03 Sep 2012
Usually, the female in these romantic comedies based on "Oh who will she choose?!" is awful and always leads to the inevitable question "WHY would EITHER of these guys want to be with her?" Well, I have to say with Reese Witherspoon, you can't ever really ask that question.
It's smart casting of the adorably beautiful every girl, and while the script certainly doesn't offer much to work with, there are some enjoyable moments. It's easy to see why the choice between Tom Hardy and Chris Pine would be a tough one, but honestly, that's how I thought of them, by their real names, not their character names.
I didn't even remember their names until it came up in the information on this page. Still, McG, if nothing else, has a decent visual eye and the action scenes are, like the rest of the movie, fun.
I'm pretty sure this was just an attempt to make a Valentine's Day movie with explosions, The explosions move this one further away from the strictly "chick flick" genre and both of the male leads are appealing to both men and women, but this feels like a movie put together by a focus group and written while someone was distracted by watching either Transformers or The Bachelorette, or maybe a combination of both.
