Review of This Is Where I Leave You (2014) by Amilcar A — 04 Oct 2014
Sometimes movies with great casts don't work very well because there are just too many personalities that need attention. If on top of that the script asks for over the top excessive acting the film can become overwhelming.
This is where I leave you has some of this as it feels more sitcom than film. It is not a terrible movie and the cast alone can make it quite tolerable but at times it just feels too scripted and predictable.
Family comedies in general have this quality as they need to be funny, at times sensitive and controversial but not too much. These are general audience movies and everything is sanitized, even if it's supposed to be difficult or risqué.
I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would but I cannot say it's a great film. It's one of the many movies that will have a short rotation and work their way into Cinemax pretty quickly.
