Review of This Is Where I Leave You (2014) by Steve M — 27 Aug 2015
A terribly un-funny, sappy, and pandering movie. A wonderful cast horribly wasted in a movie that panders and tells us the whole movie exactly how they want us to feel at all times and how we need to feel about these characters without letting us make up our own minds.
The things I did like were Jason Bateman and Adam Driver give wonderful performances. That's about it. Tina Fey is woefully miscast, but she really doesn't have much of a character. Everyone else is so wasted, I mean Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Connie Britton, and Kathryn Hahn are in this movie, and are given nothing to do.
It's not the worst movie about "dysfunctional" families but that's only because the things they do right have been done 998343 times before. Also the R rating is so tacked on, people do cuss and have sex but in this its all shoe horned in.
They wanted it to be R so it could seem like its a adult grown up movie but when its directed by the guy who directed Night and the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen, you aren't fooling anyone. A complete waste of time.
