Review of This Is the End (2013) by Tom H — 11 Jan 2015
I laughed hard, because there was so much to like, just enjoy and experience a movie that pushes the envelope of spirit and inane pop-humor. I was surprised how much I loved this, as it got really good as it got closer to the end.
The beginning was a little much, with Michael Cera and that black guy and James Franco being an ass - but overlooking those uncomfortable moments kind of works, I guess some people are not willing to put up with an hour of rude shocks to get to the insanity and crudeness and god awful pretense.
And the cameos were absolutely ridiculous, you gotta love a movie with so many surprise cameos, where they just get crazy and put together a rocking comedy of hilarious weirdness and bizarre violence and jarring scary scenes full of wit, charm, and over-the-top silliness.
It's actually not that nasty just very morbid and mentally ill. And it's not that violent, it just tries too hard, but succeeds at being a strangely quirky delirious hilarious train wreck of epic proportions and had a wonderful ending that was actually quite neat and it did have a lot of heart, I loved it.
Yet it was one of a kind, and it was hard to sit through the first hour of garbage, because the first hour was totally awful. It got nutty near the end, but so did the Lego Movie, and that movie was much better because it was the same creative insanity, without the jerky garbage and manipulative hell that any reasonable kid would be shocked and scared by something so one-of-a-kind god awful as something pretty scary like this.
You have to be a certain kind of easily amused patient and creative genius fellow to pay and enjoy this, anyone who is sheltered and gets things for free, is easily aggravated by movies like this that only work specifically for the easily amused and people who pay big bucks to be entertained - future movie stars and totally hero worshippers.
Still, it was ridiculously funny and, much like Archer or Family Guy, it was ultra crude, ultra nasty and warped and borderline scary and frightening (almost made me cry at times) but still, somehow it wasn't as bad as I originally saw and it was actually kind of good, looking back and rewriting the history books.
