Review of This Is the End (2013) by Christopher E — 26 Nov 2015

"Hermione stole all of our shit.".

Normally, a movie that is created with this kind of cast wouldn't get too much praise, but to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. "This is the End" is a comedic film about 6 celebrities who are trying to survive the apocalypse. It's a pretty basic premise, but this movie is just so funny and over the top, that in the end, I had a genuinely fun time with this movie.

To start, this film is actually really funny, and I found myself to be dying of laughter on more than one occasion. Most of the jokes in this movie work, even if it does resort to some low brow toilet humor. Although some of the jokes are lazy, much of the comedy still works and it is funny throughout the entire movie. There are a few moments where a joke was going on for too long, and a few of the scenes were awkward because the actors didn't know when to stop add-liping. This movie really does bounce back and forth between smart humor and toilet humor, but for the most part, this movie does a great job of making you laugh.

When you watch this movie, it'll be perfectly clear where the budget for this movie went. It went towards paying for all the actors and cameos that were in this movie, and I'm not necessarily complaining about that, because I loved seeing exaggerated versions of each and every actor, but the visuals/CGI weren't very good, and the settings overall looked really cheesy and weak. This movie wasn't made for the visuals or anything, and it realizes that, but it still could've been better.

This movie, although it may not seem like it, has a small message to it. It does look at a bigger picture then just the situation at hand, even if it doesn't really focus a ton on its message or anything deeper. I just liked that this comedy had more class then it was expected too, and it was not a complete raunch fest.

In the end, there's not a ton to say about this movie except that it does its job perfectly. It's extremely funny, with some great actors at the helm, along with great cameos and an interesting plot. This movie can definitely be lazy with it's jokes at times, and there were a few scenes that were prolonged. The movie's CGI is poor, but in their defense, it wasn't the purpose of the movie. In all, I had a great time with this movie, and if you like movies made by this crew before, then you'll probably love this movie. If you haven't liked their movies in the past, you won't enjoy this much more than any of their previous movies.
