Review of This Is Spinal Tap (1984) by Maxwell S — 13 Aug 2012
One of the biggest achievements in the comedy genre. Insanely funny, original and flat out entertaining. This is a film that breaks through barriers of a genre without even trying whatsoever. "Spinal Tap" is also very much a big laugh at this generation, obviously, but in doing so, I think it can be said that it is that generations "M.
Hulot's Holiday". The same subtle clever comedy, but of it's own time period. While I have always had that same humor, I'm not just being bias because it's among the funniest films in my book, it actually is a work of art in a different dimension than what the comedy is.
It's visuals are surprisingly colorful, stylish, and with those visuals and style, it can easily be called an art-house comedy. Another reason this film is great is that it never breaks character, not for even a split second, and it is entirely a comedy all the way through, it manages to be possibly the most literate comedy in a long while.
