Review of This Is Spinal Tap (1984) by Al M — 04 Aug 2010
The original mockumentary, Rob Reiner's This is Spinal Tap is a hilarious and brilliant deconstruction of not just rock n' roll but of celebrity in general. Reiner's direction is masterful, and one can see everything from Christopher Guest's later films, such as Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, to faux-reality shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Drawn Together deriving from Reiner's masterful comedy.
Words truly cannot describe the hilarity that Reiner, McKean, Guest, and Shearer bring to this film. The parody of overly sexed hard rock is brilliant, but Spinal Tap also parody 60s rock, prog rock, etc.
One brilliantly hilarious moment follows another as Reiner lampoons the idiocy underlying the celebrities we worship. A true classic of both comedy and cinema in general. This is Spinal Tap remains as awesome today as it was in the mid-80s.
